Duties
Purpose of Position: To act as a voting Member of the Board with full authority and responsibility to develop policies, procedures, and regulations for the operation CASA of Wise and Jack Counties (CWJ); to monitor its financial health, programs and overall performance; and to provide the Executive Director with the resources to meet the needs of those the nonprofit serves.
Responsibilities of the full Board:
- Establish policy. 
- Hire and evaluate the Executive Director. 
- Aid in securing philanthropic support for the operations and growth of CWJ. 
- Assume legal responsibility for total operation of the organization. 
- Develop and adopt policies to provide optimal framework for the organization. 
- Monitor finances. 
- Evaluate the progress of goals established by CWJ. 
- Ensure up-to-date knowledge of CASA standards, as well as issues pertaining to child maltreatment. 
- Know the mission, purposes, goals, policies, programs, services, strengths, and needs of CASA. 
- Support the majority decision of the Board. 
- Identify potential leadership and make suggestions to the Nominating Committee for prospective board members and officers. 
- Lead efforts to create a long-term (3 year) Strategic Plan. 
- Actively promote the purpose, goals, programs, and value of CWJ throughout the community. 
- Select and support the officers of CWJ's board. 
- Adopt key operating policies and procedures; approve contracts as appropriate. 
Duties of individual Board members:
- Prepare for, attend, and participate actively in Board and committee meetings, including appropriate organization activities. Read material distributed to the Board prior to attending meetings. 
- Maintain confidentiality with regard to external and internal matters of CWJ. 
- Avoid any action that might lead to or be perceived as a potential conflict of interest, and disclose any possible conflicts to the Board in a timely manner. 
- Refrain from becoming involved in staff conflicts. 
- Avoid becoming inappropriately-involved financially with CASA staff or volunteers. 
- Become knowledgeable about CWJ's mission, goals, strengths, and challenges. 
- Meet in-service Board Member training requirements. Offer to provide training to staff, advocates, and fellow board members when appropriate. 
- Contribute to meetings by expressing your point of view. 
- Consider others' points of view, make constructive suggestions, and take an active role in making Board decisions that benefit CWJ and its standing in the community. 
- Serve on at least one committee. Serve in leadership positions or undertake special assignments when asked. 
- Represent the nonprofit to individuals, the public, and other organizations. 
- Support or promote CASA's funding efforts in line with one's abilities, and make financial contributions when personal resources allow. 
- Assist the Resource Development Committee and staff by implementing fundraising strategies, when appropriate. 
- Assume Board leadership roles when asked. 
- Keep the Executive Director informed about any community concerns.
